And this leaves me with a much more basic question: what use is even the most beautifully designed protein if the living organism is losing the conditions that make its function possible in the first place? A protein still depends on transport, gradients, oxygen, water, substrates, membranes, temperature, circulation and the metabolic work of the whole organism. We may become extraordinarily good at designing molecules, but the molecule is not the living process. If the foundations that sustain life are failing, elegant proteins alone will not restore them.
